“Under the Double Eagle” polka is typical of the earlyZaplula Je Barcica Moja, which translates in English to “My Boat has Sailed”, is an old Slovenian folk song that was long forgotten even in Slovenia. But, tenor Eddie Kenik chose the song as the lead cut on his fifth record album “Do you Remember?” The waltz became very popular. It is one of Kenik’s most requested tunes at personal appearances, and is sung entirely in Slovenian. Eddie credits a cook at Slovenian Society Home with introducing him to the song. She thought his voice would lend itself nicely to the melody. The song relies on a lilting second part, which is based on the yodeling section of the Austrian song “Pearl of Tyrol.” This part is sometimes sung with a yodel by the vocalist. On the hit recording by Eddie Kenik with Eddie Buehner, there are many key changes. Kenik harmonizes on the second vocal part as well. On the instrumental parts, guitarist Bob McGuire, plays a single melody line in harmony with the accordion and saxophone. Another phenomenom of “Zaplula” is how the waltz was adapted by button accordion players. Zaplula is now in the standard repertoire of almost every button accordion club in America.

Zaplula, zaplula je barcica moja,
Zaplula, zaplula je barcica moja,
Zaplula, zaplula je barcica moja,
Zaplula, zaplula je v sredo morja.

Na bregu, na bregu je deklica stala,
Na bregu, na bregu je deklica stala,
Na bregu, na bregu je deklica stala,
Tocila, tocila je grenke solze.
